Kitchen Scales

When buying kitchen scales, be they mechanical or digital ones, carefully consider whether:

  • they have a good display

  • you would like your scales to have at least two units of measurement

  • the capacity is not too small

  • they are easy to clean, preferably with trays or bowls that can be detached.

Do you sometimes wonder, like I used to do, why your neighbour bakes that perfect cake or that picturesque pie while your cakes always crack open when they rise and your pie crust looks like the Arizona desert? Let me tell you the secret that I myself discovered only recently. Our neighbours must be having better kitchen scales than we do. They mix their ingredients in perfect measures and get perfect cakes and pies as a result. Either our kitchen scales have a problem or we have begun to repose too much faith in measuring with our eyes. There is no harm in using measuring cups, as I know most of you do simply because it is more convenient, but tell me honestly, do you really want to ruin a great dish by measuring in cups when using a scale would have made all the difference?

It’s all very fine to let your long experience and judgment guide you when it comes to seasoning a dish or adding sugar while making a dessert. But in cakes and cookies, measuring correctly is the key. The more accurately you weigh the ingredients, the greater the chance for your cake to resemble those in pictures in glossy magazines.

Almost every kitchen has a set of scales, but the question is: Did you choose it judiciously, or did you just buy the first thing that met your eye? It must be the latter, if what I said about cakes in the beginning matches your experience too. But better late than never, as they say. Let us start hunting for good kitchen scales.

For this, of course, we must first find out what is on offer in the market. Who would have thought there could be so much variety of a product that is one of the most unromantic, utilitarian devices in our kitchen? But there is. It took me nearly a day to get an idea of how many kinds of scales are available in the market.
